Panerai is widely credited with elevating the status of the ETA/Unitas 6497 and 6498, even though the brand never employed the 6498. The 6497 movement powered the pre-Vêndome 5218 references, including the sought-after 201/A and Slytech models.
The Unitas caliber 6497 is a Swiss made mechanical manual wind movement with 17 jewels. This movement is often confused with the Unitas 6498. This caliber is one of the most popular hand-wound mechanical movements in the watch industry.
If you’ve ever looked at a Panerai and wondered why it has the rather unusual feature of a subsidiary seconds at nine o’clock, it’s because the 6497 derivative powering it was intended as a pocket watch engine. The big difference between the two 6497 variants is that -1 beats at 18,800vph while the -2 beats at 21,600vph. The -2 can be found in watches like Panerai and typically costs more. My 1999 Panerai with 6497 ETA was never serviced in the last 25 years and the accuracy is 0.00 seconds fast or slow in one month. I am very amazed and very happy with this result of course! How about your experiences with your 6497 mvmt or with Panerai in general?
I have read quite a bit about the Unitas 6497/8 movement. From what I understand is they are easy to service anywhere, fairly accurate, long lasting and incredibly robust. Are these statements true? And if so, how do they compare to other 3rd party movements like eta 2824/sellita and seiko movements?
There have been various speculations in the past whether the Unitas/Eta 6497 calibers had some sort of connection to, or were even derived from the old Cortebert movements used by Rolex for vintage Panerai watches. Yes, PAM uses 6497-2 (which is slightly different from your normal run-of-the-mill 6497-1 which is FAR more common) with SOME modification (which gives it "OP" designation). Pretty much the difference between "regular" 6497 vs. "OP" variant (modified 6497-2) is: faster beat rate (18k vs. 21.6k) and power reserve (47 hrs vs 56 hrs). To modern ears, we know them as ETA today, the Unitas 6497 and 6498 manual wind movements differ in architecture, most obviously displayed by the different locations of the subsidiary seconds. The 6497’s small seconds are at 9 o’clock, opposite the crown. Success made by Panerai – caliber ETA/Unitas 6497. 07/10/2009 | By Frank Geelen | 2 min read |.
