Are there any tricks or techniques that are helpful to watch owners wishing to become more adept at peeking inside watches with snap-back cases? The case back is not removable. If it needs work, it needs expert attention. The movement in these 168.025 models is removed from the front of the case. Tool 105 crystal removing tool, or a generic substitute, applies pressure on the crystal. There is a two-part stem assembly that separates and then the movement is removed by a simple quarter revolution twist. The movement is accessed through the dial side- I'd say leave that to a watchmaker, as the crown with the split stem need to be removed first, and then a special pump has to be used in order to increase the pressure, so that the crystal pops out. A crystal lift can be used as well, although it tends to leave marks on the crystal.
The first step is actually to remove the stem/crown. This is a split stem so you need to apply some force to pull it out straight. You already know how to remove the bezel (the ring you describe). I tried a couple of test runs and was confident I could gently pressurise the case, so off I went.
