Creating the trapeze silhouette for Dior, Saint Laurent has a rigid understructure veiled under a fly-away cage. A boned corset anchors the dress but allows the delusion of a free swinging cone. His debut collection, spring 1958’s Trapeze line, was a runaway success. Met with a standing ovation at its presentation, it literally changed the course of fashion. Instead of Dior’s signature cinched waist, Saint Laurent created a lighter, more fluid silhouette with less fabric.Launching his first collection in 1958, he maintained the rigorous construction he had learned at Maison Dior, but freed the women’s figure, creating a more fluid silhouette under which the body disappeared.
